Theo tờ Financial Times, Cơ quan giám sát kế toán của Vương quốc Anh vừa cáo buộc cựu đối tác cùng một số nhân viên của ông lớn ngành kiểm toán KPMG có động cơ làm giả tài liệu và che mắt cơ quan chức năng nhằm trốn tránh trách nhiệm kiểm toán cho công ty Carillion.
Cụ thể, Hội đồng Báo cáo Tài chính FRC cáo buộc KPMG và 6 cựu kiểm toán viên giả mạo số liệu, biên bản cuộc họp cùng một số giấy tờ liên quan trong quá trình khai báo với các kiểm tra viên hồi năm 2015 và 2017. Những nhân viên này đã nói dối rằng toàn bộ số tài liệu trên được tạo ra sau khi KPMG kiểm toán Carillion và 1 đối tác khác là Regenersis.
Theo luật sư cấp cao James Brocklebank của KPMG, vào ngày thứ 2 của phiên điều trần kéo dài 5 tuần, 6 cựu nhân viên trên đã thừa nhận hành vi sai phạm. Tuy nhiên, điều đó không có nghĩa là KPMG phải chịu mọi trách nhiệm.
KPMG ngay lập tức quay sang chỉ trích các nhân viên cũ, dù trước đó đã cố gắng bào chữa cho họ để tránh liên đới. Tập đoàn này khẳng định không đào tạo nhân viên nói dối, ngụy tạo tài liệu, đồng thời cam đoan “đây không phải sai lầm mang tính hệ thống”.
Thời điểm tháng 7/2017, báo cáo cho thấy Carillion có một khoản dự phòng trị giá khoảng 845 triệu bảng Anh trong tài khoản, dù tình hình tài chính lúc đó khá xấu. Điều này đồng nghĩa với việc ông Peter Meehan, người chịu trách nhiệm chính trong quá trình kiểm toán Carillion, đã có hành vi không trung thực. FRC cho rằng Meehan và đồng nghiệp đã thực hiện hành vi sai phạm nhằm mục đích thăng tiến.
Hiện phiên điều trần vẫn tiếp tục và chưa công bố kết quả chính thức.
Trước đó, hồi tháng 9/2021, chi nhánh tại Australia của KPMG cũng đã bị phạt 613.000 USD vì hành vi gian lận của các nhân viên trong công tác bồi dưỡng nghiệp vụ trong suốt 4 năm từ 2016 đến 2020.
